"Jiu-Jitsu is eaasssy...."

Professor Marcus Bello

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

Origins

Jiu-Jitsu (often spelled as "Jujutsu" or "Jiujitsu") is a Japanese martial art and combat system that translates to "gentle art" or "soft technique" in English. It is a martial art focused on using an opponent's strength and energy against them, rather than relying on brute force.

Wha it is

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It emphasizes the skill of controlling an opponent and applying techniques like joint locks and chokeholds to force submission. Originating in Brazil, it was developed in the early 20th century by the Gracie family, who adapted traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo techniques into a new, highly effective system of ground combat.

The OSS! Expression (Terminology | Meaning)

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), the term "OSS" (pronounced "Osu") is a versatile and widely recognized expression. It originates from Japanese martial arts and has been adopted by BJJ practitioners worldwide. Here's a breakdown of its usage and meanings

Origins

  •  Japanese Martial Arts: "OSS" comes from the Japanese term "Osu no Seishin," which roughly translates to "persevering spirit" or "enduring under pressure."
  • BJJ Adoption: It was brought into BJJ through the martial art's roots in judo and its global spread.

OSS | Common Usages in BJJ

  • Acknowledgment: Used as a greeting, similar to saying "hello" or "respect."
Example: When meeting a training partner or instructor, you might say, "OSS!"

  • Respect: Shows mutual respect or gratitude toward instructors, partners, or during ceremonies.
Example: At the end of class, saying "OSS" to thank the instructor for the lesson.

  • Affirmation: Expresses agreement, acknowledgment, or readiness.
Example: When an instructor explains a drill, students might respond with "OSS" to show they understand.

  • Encouragement: Used to motivate or acknowledge perseverance during training or tough sparring sessions.
Example: During a challenging roll, you might hear someone say "OSS" to encourage you.

  • Endurance and Spirit: Embodies the spirit of pushing through adversity, training hard, and never giving up.
Example: Used as a mindset or mantra for the philosophy of martial arts.

OSS: Contextual Nuances | When to Use

Contextual Nuances:

  • Dojo-Specific: Some academies use "OSS" more than others, depending on their traditions and teaching style.
  • Global BJJ Culture: It has become a universal BJJ term but can sometimes be overused or misunderstood outside of martial arts.

When to Use OSS:

  • At the beginning and end of class.
  • To thank a partner for a roll or drill.
  • To acknowledge or affirm an instructor’s guidance.
  • In competitions or events to show respect.

***

At Division One Jiu-Jitsu, we proudly celebrate our students' progress ON and OFF the mats and we never charge any amount for graduations or promotions, valuing their growth as practitioners and individuals.

Striping System

  • Between major belt promotions, practitioners earn stripes on their belts.
  • Stripes are markers of progress, typically awarded for time spent, attendance, or some technical milestones.

Promotion Criteria (may vary at D1 Academy discretion)

**Skill and Technique Development:

  • Promotions are heavily skill-based, reflecting a practitioner’s ability to perform techniques effectively and adapt them in live sparring (rolling).
  • Mastery of the belt-specific curriculum is essential.

**Time and Dedication:

  • Time spent training consistently is critical. BJJ schools often have a minimum time requirement for each belt.
  • Example: 2 years as a blue belt before promotion to purple.

**Behavior and Attitude:

  • Dedication to learning, respect for training partners, humility, and adherence to BJJ principles are considered.
  • Being a positive influence in the gym and community is valued.

**Instructor's Discretion:

  • Promotions are decided by the head coach or instructor, who assesses overall readiness.
